Scary Gym is a highly anticipated event at VFES that requires many volunteers!
I Want to Volunteer! »Scary Gym: Spook-tacular, fun and safe event for students!
VFES family volunteers create a huge maze in the gym for the kids to crawl and run through.
Kindergarten and First Grade will visit Scary Gym during the school day. Nothing else for you to do, unless you want to volunteer to help out!
Second, Third, and Fourth Grade children go through the maze during their scheduled time (below) as Halloween music plays. The gym is lit by daylight – the later it gets, the darker the gym is.
“Startlers” are present to “surprise” 3rd and 4th graders only. Startlers do not jump out at students for the first five minutes of each time slot.
Upon exit, children are accounted for and receive a water bottle. Parents should meet their children in the cafeteria following Scary Gym.
Scary Gym Schedule
⇒ Look at the schedule to find your child\’s assigned time. Please check in 10 minutes before your child\’s assigned time in the VFE lobby.
⇒ Children must go through Scary Gym at their scheduled time. NO EXCEPTIONS. Children who arrive late or during any shift other than the one to which they are assigned will NOT be permitted to enter and participate in Scary Gym.
⇒ This is NOT a drop-off event. Parents/guardians must be present in the cafeteria waiting area.
⇒ There will be a movie showing in the cafeteria. Please keep children off the stage as to not interfere with the movie equipment.
⇒ We will try to accommodate same-grade siblings if requested in advance.

Will My Child be TOO Scared?
The Scary Gym provides students with a fun Halloween activity that promotes self-confidence, risk-taking, and good sportsmanship. To this end, the Scary Gym operates on levels of increasing challenge defined by grade level.
Students have the option to stop participating at any point that their level of comfort warrants. This includes assisting any student out of the maze and to the nearest exit upon request.
Students are encouraged to be cognizant of individual differences and respect the feelings of their peers. The startlers are introduced to the students in the hallway at the beginning of each session. The startlers’ role is to startle, not to frighten students.
Please consider volunteering for some of the following Scary Gym volunteer opportunities.
